I would suggest you to run SFC scan and check if that helps. The size of preview pane is not "stored" and reverts back to a big hulky size everytime a folder is reopened. I did this by R-click explorer icon>R-click 'Windows Explorer'>Properties> Then changed the Target to 'N:' (or whatever you want the default to be).
