I would suggest starting from the cables; use the SSD's cable on the SSD and for the HDD – get a new one, to be certain it's working. If you feed them a lot of garbage, you'll get garbage out. Hard drive issues are also often behind crashes that occur only when opening a specific file. Could be the hard drive, but I doubt it. I had to unplug my SSD drive and use the longer cable for the HDD and a shorter one for the SSD but kept it in the same slot.
